As a career strategist, I found that one of the first things my full-time working clients wanted to know is how can they do work they love and get paid for it.
And the answer is through having a Side Hustle.
I believe in building a bridge from where you are to where you want to be.
What is a Side Hustle?
A side hustle is any type of employment undertaken in addition to one’s full-time job. A side hustle is generally freelance or piecework in nature, providing a supplemental income.
For example: consulting or coaching, Uber driving, being a virtual assistant, doing online sales like affiliate marketing, selling items on Amazon or eBay, being an airbnb host, doing home repairs or landscaping, child care or crafts.
Why Get a Side Hustle?
Let me give you 10 reasons:
- To combat boredom or unfulfilment in your job. To do something interesting where you are learning, growing, developing new skills and experience.
- To create something new. Thereโs excitement in creation.
- To feel like you are progressing and not stuck. You see Progress = Happiness.
- A side hustle gives you an opportunity to try something new without leaving your current job. A way to test the waters.
- So you can earn extra income and not have to wait around for a pay rise that may never come.
- Having multiple sources of income is empowering. You can pay off any debt faster and build wealth for the future.
- To establish a backup of work and income in case you lose your full-time job. Job security doesnโt exist these days.
- To be your own boss where you have control and make your own decisions. Having control reduces stress.
- To be in a position to live out your passion and purpose and make an impact in the world which you may not be able to do in your current job.
- For overall well-being. I found that people who are happy with their work tend to look after their health, have better relationships and make more money.
According to Bankrate, 37% of Americans have a side hustle https://www.bankrate.com/personal-finance/smart-money/side-hustles-survey-june-2018/
And on average they earn over $700 per month, thatโs over $8K annually.
Millennials are more likely than members of other generations to have a side hustle.
In fact, the odds of someone earning money from a second job decline with age.
Millennials know that thereโs no job security, so theyโre the least likely generation to settle into a full-time job and assume that everythingโs going to be OK.
The other reason is economic. Most millennials, at least on the professional end who have been to university, have significant debt and a lot of them are looking for ways to reduce their debt faster and build a financial cushion.
