2018 in Review – Successes, Failures and Lessons Learned

Year Review, Year In Review, New Year, New Years Resolution

I found that this time of the year, between Christmas and New Years, is the perfect time to reflect back on the year’s achievements, blessings, what didn’t go well, what I learned, what I can do differently to make next year better and what I think would make next year amazing.

Before you set your goals for 2019, I recommend that you first reflect back on 2018.

I say this for 2 reasons.

Firstly, you’re going to be amazed by just how much you’ve achieved and therefore you’re going to feel good about yourself.

Secondly, you’re going to capture valuable information that’s going to set you up for success next year.

The way I do this reflection, is by asking myself these 4 questions:

  1. What went well and what am I grateful for? (Successes)
  2. What didn’t go well? (Failures)
  3. What did I learn? (Lessons)
  4. What can I do differently or what would be amazing if it happened next year? (Goals)

When I ask myself these questions I look at all areas of my life.

I broke my life down into these 4 areas:

  • Self-Image or Identity (e.g. your work)
  • Health
  • Relationships
  • Finances

So when I did this exercise this is what I found:

1. What went well and what am I grateful for? (Successes)

Self-Image:

Health:

  • I exercised at least 3 times a week
  • I ate healthy most of the year
  • I had my yearly blood, eye and skin test
  • I rarely drank alcohol and I didn’t smoke
  • I consumed lots of positive, inspiring and educational material
  • I meditated a few times but not regularly

Relationships:

  • I joined LinkedIn in May 2018 and met some new and amazing people
  • I travelled around Italy for a month with my brothers and caught up with family
  • I visited my mother regularly. She’s 93 and in an aged care home
  • I went swimming and out for breakfast with my brothers every Saturday
  • I received many messages of appreciation from people that I helped, messages like “an absolute pleasure to work with”, “a wonderful human being”, “a genuine individual”, “you helped save my life and made it richer”, “Martin has very beautiful energy”, “compassionate person”, “generous with his time” and “you’ve made my day”
  • Every day I was grateful for my family, friends and clients.

Finances:

  • Earned about $200,000
  • Reduced some of my debt
  • My clients said that my coaching was valuable and that I should charge more

2. What didn’t go well? (Failures)

Self-Image:

  • Would have liked to have reached more people with my message
  • Would have liked to see more people take action and step outside their comfort zone
  • I felt overwhelmed at times

Health:

  • Was very sick for a week in September just before I was due to take off for Europe

Relationships:

  • Felt sometimes that there wasn’t enough time to go deep in conversation with people and get to know them better

Finances:

  • The real estate market was pretty flat and my properties didn’t experience any capital gains
  • I realised that I was paying too much for my insurances and interest on my loan
  • I was paying two lots of fees due to having two superannuation funds

3. What did I learn? (Lessons)

Self-Image:

  • Need to ensure my messages are directed at the right audience, not general
  • Not everyone is ready to improve their life or career. Some people just haven’t reached the threshold where they tell themselves that enough is enough or they simply believe that things can’t get better for them (i.e. they have limiting beliefs)
  • Be at peace with myself and my failures
  • Be grateful and thankful everyday
  • Be vulnerable
  • Accept who I am
  • Keep praying
  • Be proactive
  • Keep doing the right thing
  • Surround myself with happy people
  • Have no fear. Be strong, courageous and move forward
  • Go after what I want. Think big. Don’t settle. Aim higher. I only have one life

Health:

  • I learnt that despite eating well and exercising there is still a chance you might get sick. The good news is that it’s less likely to happen if you take care of yourself
  • I need to take a day off a week just to relax as I worked just about every day last year

Relationships:

  • I realised that I love talking, so I need to focus on less talking and more listening
  • I learned that some people don’t like constructive criticism. I find that these are usually the people who find it hard to apologise after making a mistake
  • I also learned that some people don’t do what they say they will do. So the lesson is, don’t rely on people. Be careful not to get your hopes up and at the same time be positive. I guess what I am saying is to expect the best from people but have a plan B just in case they let you down
  • Let go of the negative
  • Forgive people

Finances:

  • I changed insurance companies and saved thousands of dollars
  • I restructured my loan and saved on interest
  • I am in the process of combining my two superannuation funds to save on fees.
  • I need to de-clutter so items are easier to find. Also I can sell some things that I no longer need

4. What can I do differently or what would be amazing if it happened next year? (Goals)

Self-Image:

  • Next year I want to focus more on helping people find their purpose, help them decide what career best suits them and help them start a side hustle
  • I want to present my “Motivating Change” talk to more schools and organisations
  • I want to do more promotion of my online course and books
  • I want to publish more content on my YouTube channel , my website , my LinkedIn account and my Facebook page
  • I want to read 1 new book a month
  • I want to consider building a team by outsourcing some things I do. This will free up my time
  • I want to help 12 homeless people next year
  • I want to mentor 4 teenagers for FREE next year

Health:

  • I want to continue to exercise at least 3 times a week and eat healthy
  • I want to do a 14 day sugar detox
  • I want to go vegan for 14 days straight
  • I want to be alcohol free 6 days a week
  • I want to do a 7 day no complaints challenge
  • I want to do a 21 day meditation challenge
  • I want to start planning an overseas holiday
  • I want to have fun and enjoy the process of achieving my goals

Relationships:

  • I need to let go of some people who are holding me back
  • I want to practice forgiving people who do me wrong, for my peace of mind
  • I want to give compliments more freely
  • I want to plan a romantic experience with my wife once a month
  • I want to plan an individual get together with my children once a month
  • I want to make contact with all my friends and relatives overseas once a month
  • I want to connect with 1 new like minded complimentary entrepreneur once a month

Finances:

  • Based on client feedback I have increased my coaching prices marginally
  • I want to earn more money next year and reduce my debt
