Successful people know how to deal with stress.
Stress is a normal part of life and that’s why it’s important to know what it is, what causes it, how it affects you and what you can do about it because if left unattended it could kill you.
Stress is your body’s response to a demand or situation.
It can make you feel pressured, scared, overloaded, tense, worried, alert, challenged or excited.
Stress can be either good (called “Eustress”) or bad (called “Distress”). It can be good in that it can motivate you to complete a task. However it can also be bad.
When you feel stressed your brain sends a signal to your adrenal glands which sit above your kidney.
These glands release hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases your breathing rate, heart rate and blood pressure so blood is pumped into your muscles.
Cortisol increases the amount of sugar in your blood thereby giving you more energy.
When these 2 things come together you are ready to “fight” or “flight”, which is a great if you are being chased by a lion.
However, if your stress is caused by something emotional, like being stuck in a traffic jam, then there is no outlet for this extra energy and that’s when it can damage your health.
The number 1 cause of stress is workplace stress or job stress. Followed by money, health, relationships, poor nutrition, media overload and sleep deprivation.
Research by Professor Perkins showed that 60-90% of doctor visits are linked to stress. That’s a 75% average which is huge.
The 7 ways to relieve stress are:
1. Smile or laugh
3. Move your body
4. Talk about it
5. Focus on what you can control
6. Eat and drink something healthy
7. Do work you love. Find your passion, develop it and give it to the world.
